【Teshima】

Located in the calm Seto Inland Sea, Teshima is an island with an area of 14.5 km² and a population of about 760 people. Spring water comes from Mount Dan, which rises in the center of the island, and has supported rice cultivation, agriculture, and people's lives in Teshima from ancient times to the present. Since the beginning of modern times, dairy farming has flourished, so it is called a “milk island,” and has also been known as a “welfare island,” due to the advanced welfare facilities built soon after the war. Illegal dumping of industrial waste, which began in the 1970s, has become the largest industrial waste problem nationwide, but disposal of illegally dumped waste is also progressing, and efforts aimed at environmental regeneration are continuing.

Since 2010, contemporary art facilities such as the Teshima Museum of Art have been built, and many tourists from Japan and abroad have visited.

商品説明

【Clear water of the Karato】

It is a domestic water station built during the Showa era (1929) at the foot of Danzan in the Teshima Karatooka district. The wall surface is made by piling up granite in a pattern of steps using a construction method called layering. It is structured so that spring water from the mountain flows from the upper water storage tank into a triple small tank then a large tank, and each tank is used for different purposes. It is a valuable structure showing that stones have been used extensively in living environments since time immemorial.

Particles in the air

An iron sculpture to enjoy with all five senses along with the sound of water flowing

The circular sculptures are connected together as if particles were flying in the sky, and installed around the water storage tank. There are also iron doors and benches, and it is a project to restore the bustle to the former community.

Island Kitchen

When the Setouchi Triennale was held in 2010, vacant houses in the village was renovated and designed by an architect Abe Ryo as a meeting place where people will be connected through “food and art”. Mothers from Teshima prepare lunch menus and seasonal drinks and desserts using the island's rich ingredients.

【Teshima Art Museum】

The Teshima Art Museum opened in 2010. The building designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa is characterized by its shape like a drop of water. It is located on a small hill in Teshima Karato (Karato), on a corner of a large site of rice terraces that have been regenerated with local residents, and you can enjoy the view of the Seto Inland Sea. The building is 40 x 60 meters in size, a space with a maximum height of 4.5 meters, and has a concrete shell structure without a single pillar. Surrounding wind, sound, and light are taken directly into the interior through the two openings in the ceiling, making it an organic space where the building naturally resonates.

Heartbeat Archive

Christian Boltanski has been developing a project since 2008 to collect heart sounds as proof that people have lived. The “Heartbeat Archive” is a small museum that permanently stores the heart sounds of people around the world that he has collected so far, and you can listen to those heart sounds. You can also record your own heart sounds here as well.

Place for sea dreamers

"Place for sea dreamers" This is an art work by a unit of contemporary artists and architects representing Australia. The texture, which is like a fishing net and also like driftwood, is expressed by forging iron. It is a place for various people who visit this beach to view the ocean from their hometown or somewhere far away to sit, feel closer to the sea and the sky, and let their thoughts float.
